Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

(ANNUAL EVENT) September

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month #gogold #fightlikeakid.

Did you know September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? The international symbol for childhood cancer is the "Gold Ribbon". In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and – importantly – to help raise funds for research and family support.

Coastal Kids Home Care offers families support everyday. We provide in-home nursing, specialized therapies, social services and bereavement counseling to support the whole family from infants just beginning life, to children facing the end of life. We are there from beginning to end offering the support that families need.

Without Coastal Kids Home Care, families caring for children with childhood cancer would come home without expert in-home medical care. Without us, they would have no option for home-based palliative care to support them throughout the ups and downs of treatment. And for children who receive a terminal diagnosis, our palliative care team continues on to offer compassionate end-of-life care and comprehensive emotional support for families.

Follow us on social media to learn more about Childhood Cancer Month at Coastal Kids Home Care. You will have a chance to meet some of the kids we've cared for through the years -- and remember to #fightlikeakid and go GOLD this September.

This September, help us raise money to support children and families affected by childhood cancer by buying official Coastal Kids merch. Show your support for Childhood Cancer and those that need it the most. Learn more about the inspiration behind these designs below.

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”

Diagnosed at age four with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissue, S.N. and her family battled through almost two years of treatment. After her initial diagnosis and treatment, S.N. had a wonderful time exploring all kinds of art, participating in sports (basketball being her favorite), dance, music (she played piano very well) and everything else that life had to offer until she relapsed at the age of 10. After two more years of emotional turmoil and painful treatment, in 2020 it became evident that S.N. would not make it to her 13th birthday. Although she was only 12 years old when she died from a rare childhood cancer, S.N. embraced her own challenges and sought to spread compassion to others.

This September in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, one of S.N.’s handwritten quotes is featured on t-shirts and sweatshirts in our online store. Purchase a shirt today, in memory of S.N. and support in-home palliative and end-of-life care for children living with cancer and other serious-illness in our community.
